FIRE PREVENTION
Fire prevention started in the early 60's with firefighters
conducting fire drills and safety education through the public
school system. In the late 60's, the department joined many other
local departments in teaching the 4 - H Fire Safety program to
local students.
Through the services of Fire Prevention
and Public Education Officer Justin Sechriest, the department has
one of the longest running fire prevention programs in the area.
Each year the department reaches out to thousands of children and
young adults in education programs taught in both public and
private school systems, daycares, scout troops, churches and many
other organizations.
Tools used in education programs are
far more advanced from when the programs started in the 60's. In
2000, the department purchased a Kids Safety House. This provides
the department with the ability to provide fire safety education
in a mobile classroom with special effects. Sparky the fire dog
and a talking robotic fire truck are just a few of the other tools
used in safety education.
